Sexual development is a base need of every living being and a human right to which in our opionon animals are entitled to as well. Animals just like humans have a right to physical and mental integrity and therefore to protection from any sexualized violence, of which especially any form of sexual mutilation is a part of as well.
The right for sexuality is a fundamental right in Switzerland, which is subordinate to personal freedom (Art. 10 BV): This protects "all freedoms which describe elemental manifestations of personality development" (BGE 115 la 246). Sexual rights are also universal human rights. They found in the inborn freedom, dignity and equality of all humans. (World Association for Sexology, 1997).
As animals are beings with a capacity for suffering and an own dignity, who's sexuality is comparable to that of humans in many regards, in our opinion these words hold true for animals as well.
Finally, although this does not please us at all, our basis for the ethical treatment and handling of animals is the sentence which has been used or abused in a similar manner in quite a different place before: Do not inflict upon another (being) what you do not want for yourself. And its inversion: Provide to another (being), what you like for yourself.
This sentence, in spite of its origin, has an essential meaning in ethics in regards to both its bearing on humans as well as on animals.
In a scientific working method it is not only common, but also useful to build on what exists and to not re-invent the wheel individually and newly every time yourself. Only thereby can enlightenment and the progress of humanity in every area finally be achieved. In that manner, we, in our work to the benefit of animals in the area of sexuality, build on the outstanding works of quality of other institutions and people which occupy themselves intensively and competently with the sexuality of humans, especially disabled humans. To them the gratitude of all of us is due, even the gratitude of domesticated animals which we would like to express herby. They are therefore expressly named and honored by name here:
