What leads to the artificial Desexualization of Animals
|
Vasectomy and tubual ligitation are perfectly safe, much less invasive, less destructive and much more ethical and respectful means of contraception than castration and thus contraception cannot be held as a valid argument for castration. Therefore, in my eyes there remain only three reasons for animal castration which might have to be dealt with in more detail:
- Behavior modification to silence and destroy any possible unwanted gender-specific behavior that depends on the animal's natural sexual hormones.
- Prevention of cancer which might start in sexual organs through preemptive amputation of healthy sexual organs.
- The false belief that animals are suffering from unsatisfied sexual needs.
In the context of animal rights and ethics, of respect for animals, we don't have to discuss reasons 1.) and 2.) very much. They both are trivially against animals' true and best interests.
Reason 1.), "Behavior modification to silence and destroy any possible unwanted gender-specific behavior that depends on the animal's natural sexual hormones." is a pure animal-user argument, which sees animals as objects that are means to human ends only. It is obviously an argument that can only be made by someone who sees animals as mere slaves that are here only to satisfy his or her needs. No further thoughts are needed on such a trivial motivation. It is obviously not ethical or in accordance with animals' interests.
Reason 2.) for castrating animals, "Prevention of cancer which might start in sexual organs through preemptive amputation of any possible sources of cancer." at first sight seems much more in accordance with animal protection and animal rights, but on close inspection it turns out to be not much better than reason 1.):
Preemptive amputation of healthy organs just because the animal might get cancer robs the animal of several or all years of it's life with it's natural, healthy and intact body and its hormones. If cancer would have never occurred, the amputation is totally unjustified. Doing so preemptively, before there is cancer, is an unjustified egoistic gamble, a bet at the animal's expense that it will certainly get cancer at an early age. Animal breeds for which there are statistics which prove such, are simply not fit to be bred. Such breeds should be eliminated by not allowing them to reproduce, not continually be bred and castrated.
Preemptive castration against cancer is a way of prolonging the life of the animal, not truly for the animal's sake, how could cutting off its healthy sexual organs be for the animal's sake, but rather for the owner's sake to be able to longer safely exploit the animal, to be able to use it longer as a "pet" or as a "companion", etc. Castrating an animal for such reasons is like cutting off your wife's breasts or your husband's testicles with the argument that you just wanted to save them of possible cancer. Without asking permission first. We don't have to think about that reason much more to reveal it's true motivation and lacking ethics.
Finally, what we do have to think about in much more detail though is reason 3.) for castrating animals, "The false belief that animals are suffering from unsatisfied sexual needs". Therefore the second half of this article will deal almost exclusively only with that.
